Condemned Inmate Frank Abilez Dies of Natural Causes

SAN QUENTIN-- Condemned inmate Frank manuel Abilez, 53, was found unresponsive in his cell this morning at San Quentin State Prison. Abilez was pronounced dead of natural causes at 10:49 a.m. He was single-celled.

Abilez was received onto California’s death row on December 10, 1997.

He was sentenced to death by a Los Angeles County jury for the March 15, 1996, murder and sodomy of his 68-year-old mother Beatrice Abilez Loza, who was the mother of 10 children.

Since 1978 when California reinstated capital punishment, 57 condemned inmates have died from natural causes, 19 have committed suicide, 13 have been executed in California, one was executed in Missouri; and six died from other causes.  There are 724 offenders on California’s death row.
